The reason why men and women do this is to keep a perfect appearance for society. In modern day this still happens as men will go to the barber shop to get a clean haircut and women are going to salons for their haircut and manicures. These actions are done because of American society begging people to keep a clean look and a good appearance (Carter 2015). Although, in American society there is still a debate about weight and beauty and Miner perfectly describes the debate. Miner states that in the American culture people are forcing fat people to be skinny and skinny people to be fatter. This still happens today as some Americans believe that skinny people are starving so they need to eat more, yet when they see fat people Americans think that they are obese and need to go on a diet, which will connect to eating disorders. In present day of American culture, nudity is still something that a person does in the privacy of their home and not in public. While other cultures accept nudity, in America, nudity is a sign of something sexual and negative (Cowell 2007). In the media, Americans will censor any naked part of the body and in schools there are rules that a student should not show a certain part of their body. Some states in the US have laws where a person must be wearing clothes in public locations, yet if an American is nude then the American will be ticket. When Americans see a naked body the first instinct is to avoid seeing the naked body by turning away and covering the eyes, which is exactly what Miner wrote in his essay. However, Miner describes how the two genders feel when it comes down to nudity. When females are forced to be nude in front of doctors, in most cases females will feel violated or trick into harassment, which is true in current day.
