Holistic medicine is defined as the form of healing, which considers the whole person -- body, mind, spirit, and emotions -- in the quest for optimal health and wellness. ("Holistic Medicine: What It Is, Treatments, Philosophy, and More n.p.). Holistic medicine has been around for many years and is still being used today. Holistic medicine dates back to ancient Chinese times. Long before penicillin or x-rays, healers recognized the importance of emotional and spiritual well being in achieving physical health. Two of the most well documented ancient holistic health traditions are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. TCM originated almost 5,000 years ago and has continued to evolve into a complex system of diagnostic and treatment methods that are still practiced today.
Many people may consider holistic or alternative medicine over western medicine because of the side effects of today’s medicines. Although, when, choosing holistic medicine there are adverse side affects which many times those can be deadly. Because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not approve the use of holistic medicine many doctors do not consider holistic therapy viable options for there patients. Many people think these herbs or holistic remedies are safe but are unaware, when taking certain holistic medicines have serious drug-herb interactions that can be deadly and the positive effect they do encounter could be attributed to the placebo effect.
