I was always told that it takes a village to raise a child, and I believe one hundred percent of that. I was born and raised in the Chicago Illinois and seventy-five percent of my family resides here as well. I am grateful to know and have both side of my family in my life considering that I was at one point a foster child. All twelve of my siblings were adopted by my mother’s sister Luanne. I was raised by my whole family, I grew up in a house of seventeen people and seven rooms. We had a revolving door of relatives coming and going when times were rough for them. My aunt took me in when I was two years old and the rest is history

Juliette was from Chicago and she never know her real father and was adopted by her mother’s husband Wiltz Brown, he was creole from New Orleans. He was very light and often passed as a white man, he got his first job at the Tootsie Roll Factory when he moved to Chicago because his boss thought he was white. He spoke French fluently and had a thick accent. My dad would joke and pronounce my name funny and when I asked him why, he would say “that’s the way my grandad says it; I loved how he said their names”.
My family and I are working hard to go further into our history, it will be a difficult task when both my great grandmothers were adopted by their step fathers. We are planning a family reunion to bring as much family history to one place to connect the missing pieces. I’m glad to have been able to find this much out about my family, considering that both side have little knowledge. I believe with the information I do have I can investigate deeper and find out more. My family is not as close as I needed us to be so that I can get more information from, it was like pulling teeth to get what little I do

My eighty-three year old grandfather handed me an overwhelmingly thick book titled “Sheils Family History” and said, “Here; look through this. Maybe you’ll run into one of these people.” I suppressed a laugh, thinking of the near zero probability of me “running into” one of my distant family members as I travelled abroad for the next two weeks. However impatient, I sat quietly listening to my grandpa chirp away about our ancestors and his war stories, while I pictured myself for the next fourteen days in a completely new place.…

The reading The Other Family addresses an important problem in Canadian society. There is a hegemonic culture in Canada that causes immigrants to fear that they will lose their own customs and traditions. In the reading the little girl drew a picture of a family that was not representative of her own but that was what she knew to be a “Canadian family”. The reaction of her mother is indicative of the fact that this is a concern for their family and their heritage. This shows the overarching issue about the education system not being inclusive of all cultures as they should be in a multicultural country.…

Family Introduction Creating this genogram was a difficult task for me because my parents and their siblings hardly communicate with each other anymore. Ever since the passing of both my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother, the families have simply fallen apart. Sociopolitical and spiritual issues have caused some members of both families to harbor resentment against one another.…

Doing a Genogram about my family history, beliefs, and culture is somewhat difficult for me due to a number of reasons. One being that I never met my biological father therefore don’t know anything of the family background that compiles half of my genetic make up, another reason being because I know very little of my mother’s extended family, and frankly because I don’t think we really have many structured family beliefs. Before I dive into the cultural beliefs that my family has, let me quickly explain my family dynamic. My mother was one of two daughters. My aunt Debra moved to Texas before I was born and to this day I have never met her or anyone in her family.…
