“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”-Jane Howard. Like many other families, my family is often dysfunctional or rambunctious at times; however, it is those moments that allow you to see the beauty in complexity. The family structure is the single most important institution in every individual’s life. Not only does it provide a person with their first means of socialization, but it also molds actions, thoughts and behaviors by instilling morals and values at a young age. My family is from Brooklyn, New York, which is also where the majority of my family currently resides. We have an intricate dynamic that may be confusing to some. On my maternal side, my grandmother had three children, all of which have different fathers. However, they did not see half brother and sister they only saw each other as siblings; our family is heavily blended. My uncle’s siblings on his father’s side also associate themselves as siblings with my aunt and mother. In addition, my grandfather also raised my aunt as his own. About a year, after I was born, my grandmother passed away due to cancer. My entire life, my uncle, and his wife assumed the roles of my maternal …show more content…
I interviewed my Aunt Louise Howard who is eighty-nine years to gain her perspective on how the Black Family has changed over time. Centuries ago, the community had more involvement with the upbringing of children. Children had a neighborhood full of fictive kin who looked out for one another and reared them in the right direction. The community was unified because individuals understood each other since everyone was facing the same struggles. In today’s society, black people look for validation through material things to prove that they are better than the next black person. More importantly, there was not the sense of pride that there is

As a child raised in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, my initial encounter with people from other backgrounds occurred when the school district started bussing kids across the city to largely populated white schools. While this experience took us out of our neighborhood schools, it provided an opportunity to meet students from other races, ethnicities, and religions which were different from me. Interacting with kids from various backgrounds helped me to be more open to different perspectives and not to prejudge. Additionally, the church I grew up in was very strict.…

As an African American female, there is a constant battle with being able to feel as if you are enough. Society makes black women feel as if her skin is not beautiful, as if God did not take his time creating her melanin and the course of her hair. They label us as loud, aggressive and incompetent. On the other hand, you have people that look just like you, who fight the same battle as you against the world, and they make you feel as if you are not worthy either. Therefore, I’m left with the question “What is my purpose?”…

I have felt many pressures, race is such a big problem among black people but as community can get over the hump of being pressured into a few stereotypes. From my own personal experience being a young black man growing up in many places of black being the majority such as Detroit, Chicago, New York I felt an amazing amount of comfort around these areas. Once I move down to La Vernia Texas, being enrolled into an all white school with a lot of Mexicans and the only black people could only fit on a bench in a hallway that we called “The Black Bench” in high school, I attended La Vernia school district for 7 years from 4th grade all the way to 10th grade in high school. Weber is one of the three Fathers of Sociology and studied in detail the sociology of religion, politics and government. He looked at the social behaviour in terms of tradition. Meaning that he believed people act accordingly to those who lived before them. The way in which people lived was down to what was acceptable within in society in which they learnt from older people. What causes people to act towards certain groups who may differ from them? For most, it is the experiences they are dealt with throughout their life, with even moments that seem insignificant having sizeable and long-term effects. These experiences can range from something that occurred to an individual in person or online, or secondary reactions to how a group behaves. With secondary reactions, it is important for one to note the importance of beliefs passed to individuals from parental, societal and peer figures, and how they can positively or negatively impact one’s attitude throughout life. By understanding the various experiences that impact one’s life, I feel both second hand, and specifically familial experiences, have played a negative role in my perception of African Americans and negatively influenced my…
