Though these two environments are quite different, Something that didn't change was the family I would be raised in.Growing up in a family which which has taught me to respect my culture and morals as well as embrace my religion has paved the way for me as an individual to take a more broad understanding of the world. The person I am today reflects not only what my family has made out of me, but my surroundings as well.

Whenever I was in need, those around me would always have my back and support me to the fullest. Given that people were there to support me meant a lot, but why? I was supported because people had faith in me,believed that I would get somewhere and knew that I wouldn't let them down. Me being an individual supported by the reason of others had no choice but to fulfill that reason.Specifically, one person in my community has influenced me greatly and has taught me skills needed to survive in the real world. This person is my next door neighbor, Frank. I've known Frank as long as I can remember, he has molded my mental state of mind into a figure which depends on itself and only itself to provide. It's as if Frank was the hammer and chisel which slowly chipped pieces of rock away from my body to shape something I have not yet become. As a individual, Learning to grow up did everything besides hider me. This built a mentality for me, to help those in need for only you will be there in their most needy

Brownsville, Texas is the town that I was raised in and can still call home. It was rich with Mexican culture and delectable, greasy tacos but it was still an economically disadvantaged city meaning that there were never enough resources to guide students to better opportunities. Of course, I never knew I was deprived of such an apparent luxury until I came to The University of Texas at Austin. When this realization came, I became frantic because of how behind I felt. I began looking for all sorts of resources and opportunities the university had to offer.…

Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…

Writing this gives me the opportunity to tell you what it was like when I was growing up in South Dallas. I can truly say that I enjoyed it! It wasn’t like the 9th Ward in New Orleans, Louisiana, but it was enough for me to grow up in a close knit family and a community environment that became personal among several classmates, church members, and school teachers. Also, at times, living in the hood became a nightmare. Always around 12 mid-nights, you could hear gun shots blasting like police sirens.…

There two of my three younger brothers were born but New Mexico was only my backstory. At the end of my first-grade year, my family and I moved to Texas which was where I finally understood what I had been taught by parents: be kind, chose your words carefully, and work hard in everything.…

I’ve never been able to decline help to someone in need. I always put everyone else's needs before my own because when I sacrifice myself in order to put a smile on someone else’s face it gives me peace. Contributing to a cause to make the world a better place is worth the sleepless nights. When one is passionate about helping people it won’t matter to them how long they have to go without food or how tired they will feel at the end of the day.
