In the first verse, J. Cole starts off the song with the words “American hypocrisy”. This nicely sums up the contents of verse one. J. Cole explains how the European settlers came to America to get away from religious persecution and how they fought for independence against Britain. Even though they fought for freedom from Britain they went on to own slaves and rob another race of their freedom. J. Cole also points out the irony in America taking the lives of those who kill, such as groups like ISIS, yet only one is a murderer. He recalls when Osama Bin Laden was killed and everyone was cheering.
