Heritage Assessment: Cultural Differences Heritage assessment tools are used as a guide to assist in developing plans based on an indivudals cultural assssement. Heritage assessment tools prompt the interviewer to ask questions that pertain to their family’s background such as parent origins, race, relgious beliefs, customs, and practices. Gaining knowledge of an individual’s background will allow a health care professional to build plans that will be achievable. Wikipedia encyclopedia, (2014), defines Serbian cuisine “Serbia will have 3 meals daily, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with lunch being the largest and most important meal. Cuisine consist of grilled heavily seasoned mixed ground meat, Serbian salad (stuffed cabbage), desserts are a mixture of Balkan desserts native to central Serbia, and beer is widely consumed in Serbia”. Gujic (personal communication, March 28, 2014) stated “All my family moved to the United States when I was twelve years old; aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and parents. Wherever they go, I go. My family lives within a thirty mile radius and we visit each other at least two times a week”. One particular holiday observed is Easter. Easter is celebrated on a different day of the year according to the calendar. Good Friday is the most prominent day in the Serbian Calendar. Families dye their eggs red, symbolizing happiness, joy, rebirth, and blood of Christ. Forty-six day fast preceding Easter is strict in Serbian tradition. Forbidden foods include meat, dairy, and eggs. Health care is sought from health care professionals. Some folk medications are used such as teas, vinegar, herbs, and vitamins for health maintanence.
