Rasheed is not happy because he and Mariam have tried six times to have a child, but not once has it ever worked out. One night, Mariam’s food is not up to par, and he snapped like a rubber band that has been wound too tight. He exercises his superiority and forces Mariam to eat rocks, thus breaking some of her teeth. Hosseini is using symbolism to try to explain in simple terms the deep concept of the importance of women in Afghanistan. All of the men are out in the world making a difference, and everyone can see the intelligence because it's out there for the world to see, but all of these bright and intelligent people, the women, are hiding behind the walls of their houses because the men will not allow them to live up to their full potential. The walls represent not so much figurative walls but literal walls in the sense that it is talking about the walls of the houses.
