Everyone had the same amount of skill, whether it was in fields of athleticism, intelligence, or physical appearance. The government made sure this happened by putting "sash weights and bags of birdshot" (Vonnegut 2), on citizens who possessed skills that were above average, to burden their talents. They installed ear pieces which would automatically erase any single person's thoughts, that could potentially be a 'threat to the society'. If anyone thought negative of the rules commissioned by the government, they wouldn't "get very far with it before another noise in their ear radio scattered their thoughts." (Vonnegut 2). As a result of these harsh rules, people stopped developing, in terms of education and being able to share specific skills with the world. Equality was favored more than individuality. There was no progress being made, which made the public more vulnerable. The government is able to manipulate the society even more, causing it to be in a terrible state or unawareness.Yes, equality in a society is a positive thing, in terms of race, religion, gender, nationality, etc. However, we are all meant to be unique, and have different areas in which we succeed. Equality in all terms of our basic life will cause the world to have a lack of diversity. In today's time, lawmakers are creating changes that provide equal rights for everyone, the author reminds us that if taken to a certain extent, it can prove to be dangerous.
