In the recent two months, Hamlet’s home life has had a drastic turn. His father, with whom he was relatively close with, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, causing emotional turmoil. Hamlet has ascertained in our couple meetings that he “[does] not set his life at a pin’s fee,” adding to my reason to believe he feels hopeless about his current stage of his life. Hamlet has stated that he is religious in one of our sessions, which he claims is the factor that is holding him back from self-harm and suicide, as he has mentioned, “[My] sullied flesh would melt, thaw and resolve itself into a dew, or that the Everlasting had not fix’d his canon gainst self slaughter.” He thus stated that he was victim to suicidal thoughts but had a difficult time condoning it. The recommended first route of treatment is to immediately put Hamlet on antipsychotic medication or a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) to help alleviate some of the psychological symptoms, given that he consents to it. There are also many forms of therapy available to Hamlet, including but not limited to cognitive behavioral therapy and family therapy. I would suggest beginning with family therapy, that way his homelife will improve with the gained understanding of his mother and his uncle. With the family therapy, I would recommend installments of psychotherapy so that Hamlet has an outlet to express how he is feeling and to monitor his improvements. If it comes to it, and Hamlet does not respond to the medication or the therapy, hospitalization will be required to ensure that he is getting the utmost advantage of the treatment plan, and to prevent his rash actions and mood swings from interfering more with his
