Modesty and virtue were supposed to be displayed through the woman’s hair by keeping it covered and not worrying about allowing its visibility.(Rosalie’s 17) In the 1920s, flappers broke away from society's image of womanhood. They dropped the corset, wore makeup, limited the amount of clothes they wore, created the concept of dating, and chopped their hair. They were considered the “new” and more “modern” woman. After the war, women were just as anxious to live their lives as the men were. Instead of returning to the rules, they did just that. Because of all of the rebellion, flappers were always known as an attractive and slightly unconventional young woman, who was somewhat foolish and inclined to go against the rules that were set by her elders. Nobody ever really thinks about the impact of their hair until they come to the point of losing it, whether it’s voluntary or mandatory. Alopecia is a factor that helps prove how much women actually rely on their hair. Hair loss is a universal symbol when it comes to having cancer. Once you lose your hair, you lose the unique physical trait that you were born with. You are then removed from the unique category and labeled as sick. (Mayo Clinic Staff 3). Women are encouraged to acknowledge the fact that they are losing their hair instead of avoid it. Most people choose to purchase a wig that was similar to their natural hairstyle so that they can have some stability and control over the situation. The loss of hair during cancer is a constant reminder of what the patient is going through, that's the worst part. (Napolitano 4) Shaving is also placed under the hair loss category. In the modern world, women not shaving has become more acceptable because women feel like not shaving gives them more control. Society has previously made it seem mandatory for women to shave in order to keep their femininity. But women view their bodies as their temples. How she chooses to care for it is ultimately her own decision. Not shaving could also be a woman’s way of proving her freedom to do what she wants with her body, and others admit that shaving is just too time consuming for their daily routines. Not
