November 2, 2016 A 2014 report from the New York State Department of Health showed that the United States had an estimate of 123,000 people infected with HIV. The HIV and AIDS epidemic continues to affect the African American community. Now HIV and AIDS has a major effect on young African American women. There are risk factors and what seems to be co-occurring issues for young African American women that are identified at-risk for sexually risky behavior. One of the issues that is prevalent when it comes to young African American women, is the topic of sexual intercourse. One known behavioral factor can include sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse is the primary transmission mode of HIV infection among this race and age group. In fact, at the end of 2012, the CDC released new data that estimated 57,200 youth aged 18-24 were living with HIV in the United States. Socioeconomic factors can have a negative effect on the health of a young woman of color. Some factors that play into this can be access to care, or communication. Women of color can often lack access to affordable health services, which can reduce the chances of them obtaining health information, like how to reduce their risk for HIV infection. Communication on the other hand can differ by ethnicity, age, or socioeconomic status. In some cultures, they discourage discussions about sex, condom use, or any type of sexual behaviors. According to a 2014 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report from the CDC, most African American females and their families obtain some of their discussion about HIV and sexually transmitted diseases through school or at home with family members. Some factors to also consider is the cultural barriers and its effect on young women of color. There was a point where the African American community did not view HIV/AIDS as an issue or threat.
