Since the birth of the nation in 1776 and the construction of the United States Constitution, the right to own a weapon has been as important as the right of free speech. The second amendment of the constitution allows people to defend their rights from any foreign or domestic force that wished to take their rights away. Owning a weapon also enables a person to defend his or herself or another in a life threatening situation, but there are more and more people today who believe that a gun is too much power in the hands of the average person as mass shootings shock the world. The second states that all americans have the right to bear arms. The second most important right in our country is the right to own a gun. This is not only a symbol of our patriotic pride. This right also secures the people 's ability to defend themselves from any threat, both foreign and domestic. If a foreign country invades the United States, the people can defend themselves. If a man breaks into someone 's home, the people inside can defend themselves. Even if our government decides to break our constitution and seize control, the people can defend themselves. Our former president Ronald Reagan said “It [the second amendment] ensures that the people are the equal of their government whenever that government forgets that it is servant and not master of the governed.”(Dodge). The government holds power because the people bestow that power on them. The people can also take it away if the government does not respect the rights of the people.
