Greek Stereotypes

Improved Essays
Stereotypes, everyone has heard more than a few in their lifetime, but we all know most of them aren’t true. So, why is it that we believe in most stereotypes if most aren’t real? Some stereotypes can be understandable, but some stereotypes can be outrageous. The only reason these stereotypes exist is because of media, or a single person’s experience. House parties, mixers, hazing, drinking, sex…what seems to be forgotten are the positive facts about going Greek, and there are many. A whole article could be dedicated to someone’s opinion on why going Greek is amazing, but I’m not here to write specifically about that. What I am here to write about are the most common stereotypes …show more content…

However, this phenomenon is one of the numerous times something like this had occurred throughout history. Even recently, in the technologically and morally advanced world, the importance of one’s name wrecked havoc in the society. A series of “common but brutal” hazing rituals took place in the bus of a university band, which “cost [one student] his life” (Alvarez 1). A superstitious ceremony was developed by the band to prove each students worthy of being in the group. Nevertheless, I have found other opportunities to counter this, the best being Phi Slam. This is because members of Phi Slam introduced themselves to me the first day I was here by simply inviting me to come hangout with them. After realizing how genuine the guys really are, I have been attending their parties ever since; one being the “Pig Pickin’.” This party included: five hundred pounds of barbeque, a live pig, and what I perceived as over one thousand people. All this packed in the driveway of the Phi Slam house located about a mile outside of campus.…

Without a doubt, classical Greek myths were created as a means to explain traditions, beliefs, and natural phenomena of archaic Greek society. Although Greek myths seem ancient to the current era, their concepts, and terminology continue to exist and are evident in modern society. In fact, the myths are prevalent in nearly every aspect of modern society due to the extensive reaches and capabilities of corporations. Able to interact with people worldwide, companies spread Greek ideas with the commodities they produce and sell. Modern companies use imagery and symbolism that allude to classical Greek myths to add background and details to their company’s name and products; moreover, as a part of their marketing plan, they deliberately manipulate…

Whether it being, giving student’s connections, philanthropy, or providing a fun atmosphere for several stressed college students. The affect it has on the students individually is huge too. Coming together can allow for others to be more open to talking about these issues as well as advocate for the prevention of them. “The campaign encourages the world to ‘speak out with a unified voice for change’ which is what we are doing as a Saint Mary’s community,” she…

    • 3 Pages

While more than half of sexual assaults against women of college age occur off campus, on campus assaults are a problem that college and universities can and should do more to address. The best statistics show there is a correlation between 3 factors, alcohol use, sorority membership, and class status, and sexual assault on campus. To combat these trends colleges and universities need to address these factors while taking into account that any measures they take not simply move the problem from campus to off campus locations. This means that the measures taken should be centered on raising awareness, encouraging responsibility, and holding offenders accountable in a just way, while also addressing the campus code of conduct.…

It has been around a lot longer than that. Hazing activities date back to when Plato founded his academy in 387 B.C. Plato encouraged the young men in his academy to play practical jokes on newcomers “had to be polished before he could become a regular member” (Alvarez 45). Plato may have come up with the idea of hazing, but researchers have found that the barbaric rituals associated with now-a-day hazing have roots…

During my junior year at Bayonne High School I started dating a Greek girl from my Biology class. Before I had gone to meet her parents she felt the need to warn me about her father and his attachment to Greek customs even going as far to say he probably wouldn’t like me due to my non-Greek heritage. I brushed it off as paranoia on her part because who would really be so into their culture that they would immediately dismiss someone they didn’t know out of hand? I couldn’t have been more wrong. Her father was an absolute nightmare with very bold, direct, and rude comments being spit out continuously while saying a “Greek boy” would understand his humor.…
