Great post Jamie. I especially like that you mentioned that no matter what race, ethnicity, or sexual preference each client is an individual who views their world through their own eyes. Moreover, a hundred people can experience the same crisis and each person views and handles that crisis differently depending upon their individual experiences. One way to build a relationship with a client who is different from you would be to explain that all individuals and families experience life stressors (Gladding, 2015). Response to Kristen's post Kristen, I must say that I do agree with you when you stated that the insurance companies do dictate a patient's life. Being that the patient can't leave AMA and they will not pay is a bit absurd to me. I personally feel that the patient should be able to make whatever decision they feel is right especially when it comes to their health. So longs we explain the possible outcomes to them then the patient should be able to make their own choice. Sometimes the patients are tired of the treatments especially if they know that their disease is progressing and there is nothing that can be done but mask the symptoms and not cure the disease.…

Assignment #1 Engagement Strategy When first meeting with a client, it is imperative to establish rapport, as well as engaging the client. In order to build rapport, a social worker must create a safe and welcoming environment in which the client feels accepted, understood, and respected. The most important moments of the relationship between the social worker and the client often happens at the beginning of the relationship, the initial contact (Birkenmaier, Berg-Weger, & Dewess, 2013, p. 68). One way a social worker can develop rapport with a client is by identifying the client’s unique attributes such as their social economic status, race, and gender, in addition to recognizing the obstacles in engaging the client, and the potential…

The other 14% that the front line workers spend with the client is utilized by retrieving more data for the system.…

The only time I could see how cognitive theory might not be the most effective approach would be if a person has a strong belief or value that prevents them from acknowledging their cognition as the cause of their actions. Additionally, cognitive theory can be used in the general population because it can be applied to all individuals in every socioeconomic status.…

Under the theory of problems in living this can sometimes be seen as unrealistic as people tend to have incongruence in their lives. A person is said to enter counselling in a state of incongruence and it is the counsellors aim to reverse this incongruence (Rogers, 1959). Other problems may occur in the formation of a successful therapeutic alliance as this may not always occur between a counsellor and a client. Rogers (1959) described the relationship between the counsellor and the client as a critical variable. If this critical variable is not present to its full extend then this ultimately may result in an unsuccessful and unbeneficial counselling experience of the client.…

My first experience with a LCSW gave me a strong desire to never become one. This was due to the fact that my abused best friend was scared that my mother had reached out to CPS for help. While individuals interested in social work may say that their career goals stem from the fact that they would like to “help people”, I understand that social workers cannot change people’s lives, but people can change their own life. And social workers often have the keys and the ability to teach an individual how. Any profession can be considered a “helping profession”: we need dentists, nurses, doctors, accountants, even IRS agents.…
