The European Union (EU) is an economic and political union where each of the countries within the Union is independent, but they agree to trade under the agreements made between the nations. The purpose of the EU is to operate as a single market that allows free movement of goods, capital, services and people between member states. Great Britain had a big decision to make, whether or not to stay in the EU or go it alone. On June 23, 2016 with over 33 million voters making history the vote was at 51.89% for ‘Leave’ and 48.11 from ‘Remain.’ According to the Telegraph, “in a close-run vote, the British public decides to exit the European Union. An emotional David Cameron resigns as prime minister the next day.” Mr. Cameron has said he will be stepping down as prime minister in October. (The Telegraph)
What is next and what does the future hold for Great Britain? Over the next two years while the exit from the EU happens (Brexit,) the people of Great Britain will have continuous change. For Great Britain to leave the EU, they have to invoke an agreement called Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. They have two years to negotiate the withdrawal from the EU. Moving forward the EU and the leaders of Great Britain are uncertain what the impact will be on the daily life of the citizens. Since this is the first time in history that a country has left, the EU no one really knows how the Brexit process will work.
