Great Britain, also known as Britain, is the largest island in Europe and the ninth largest in the whole world. Great Britain has a very big population, so in 2011 the population was about 61 million people, making it the third most populated island in the world. Most people say this island is known for its great history. Some examples of its history are World War I and World War II. This shaped the importance in Great Britain in very many ways. These places are both some of the most significant landmarks in the world, and some people just go there to see these sights. Elizabeth the II and Margareth Thatcher were just two women who made Great Britain who it is today. Both of these women played a huge political role for the United Kingdom which changed the way people look at Great Britain and how women can change the world too. One of the first major events in Great Britain was World War I, also known as the First World War, or the Great War. This war began on July 28, 1914, and lasted until November 11, 1918. Over 9 million soldiers and 7 million civilians died as a result of the war. The first World War began as a local war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia in 1914. It turned into a war which involved 32 countries. The Allies included Italy, France, Russia, Britain, and the United States.
