There were 8579 people that were interned in camps in WWI. These camps were located in Vernon, B.C. and Spirit Lake.
2. Who was the typical internee you would expect to find in these camps (make a description)? What other countries/areas were the internees from? (3 marks)
You would typically find an internee that is from Ukraine that was male, unmarried, poor and unemployed. Within these camps there were also people from countries such as Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Serbia, Poland, Turkey, Romania and Russia.

Robert Borden was granted extra powers when the War Measures Act that allowed him to arrest anyone without charge, media censorship, deportation without trial and the control and disposal of property. He acquired these powers on August 22, 1914 when the War Measures Act was invoked.
