The play that I read is entitled Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) and it is by Ann-Marie MacDonald and published by Vintage Canada in 1998. This play is about a woman named Constance who is an assistant professor at Queen’s University and works for Professor Claude Night. She is working on a thesis about the works of Shakespeare and somehow ends up inside two of his most famous plays. I thought that this play was very interesting because you got to see more from the characters in the plays “Othello” and “Romeo and Juliet”. Also, I found Constance to be a very interesting character and reading her interactions with the characters in the plays was very interesting. I quite enjoyed this play. I thought that the idea behind it was very interesting and if I could I would probably go see it in action. The author’s purpose was to get us inside of the minds of the characters from the two plays a bit more than in the originals. An example of this is that in Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet” we know that Romeo will basically fall in love with anyone but we really see this when Romeo develops feelings for Constance while she’s pretending to be a boy. The story starts off in the University where Constance, the protagonist, works.
