The play that I read is entitled Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) and it is by Ann-Marie MacDonald and published by Vintage Canada in 1998. This play is about a woman named Constance who is an assistant professor at Queen’s University and works for Professor Claude Night. She is working on a thesis about the works of Shakespeare and somehow ends up inside two of his most famous plays. I thought that this play was very interesting because you got to see more from the characters in the plays “Othello” and “Romeo and Juliet”. Also, I found Constance to be a very interesting character and reading her interactions with the characters in the plays was very interesting. I quite enjoyed this play. Next, Desdemona thinks that Constance and Othello are having an affair behind her back right before Constance is taken and placed in the next play. This time, she keeps Tybalt from killing Mercutio and tells them both that Romeo and Juliet have been married. Due to this new information Tybalt befriends them both and they all go to a party together. Later on, Romeo and Juliet both fall for Constance (who at this point is disguised as a male) which causes them and Tybalt to all get into a fight. Desdemona shows up and tries to kill Constance but she stops and helps her get away from Tybalt. Constance makes a great discovery which ties up her story and she is then sent back home to Queen’s University. The main character is Constance, the assistant professor. Desdemona, Iago and Othello are the main characters that we meet when Constance enters the play “Othello”. Romeo, Juliet and Tybalt are the main characters that we meet when Constance goes into “Romeo and Juliet”. The climax happens when Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt and Desdemona are all after Constance and she has no idea what to do. Then the resolution is when she figures out the answer to her problem and gets sent home. My opinion of this story is that some points of the story were a bit odd like when Romeo and Juliet were fighting over a turtle and they somehow ripped it in half and when the two were both in love with Constance so they both cross-dressed while wearing each other’s clothes to impress her. Although all in all, I thought the play had an interesting story to it and enjoyed reading it. I would definitely recommend reading this play to people because it was a fun ride to be on and sometimes that’s all you really need in a good book. This play left me with a feeling of happiness. I loved this story because it had a very interesting concept behind it with the mystery that the protagonist was trying to figure out about Shakespeare. I also loved getting to experience Constance and the characters interacting. The most difficult thing about the book, for me, was that I had never read or seen the play “Othello” so it was probably a bit more difficult for me to understand what was happening when she was in that play. However, I still fully understood the story so even if you aren’t experienced with Shakespeare you can still enjoy the
