Traditionally, Shakespeare’s tragedy plays end with death. That’s what makes them tragedies. William Shakespeare’s famous play, Romeo and Juliet, written in 1597, abides by Shakespeare’s tradition of a tragedy and ends with the death of the ‘Star-Crossed lovers’, Romeo and Juliet. But to what extent can Nurse, Tybalt and Friar Lawrence be blamed for the devastating deaths of the two protagonists? Friar Lawrence, Tybalt and Nurse can be held responsible for the tragedy for multiple reasons including marrying the couple, helping to consummate the marriage, wanting revenge and for patriotism to Verona, the city in which the play is set.

In Act I scene 5, Tybalt angrily says, “This, by his voice, should be a Montague. Fetch me my rapier, boy. What dares the slave? Come hither covered with an antic face. To fleer and scorn at our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honour of my kin, to strike him dead I hold it not a sin!” This quote is exclaimed the time that Tybalt realises Romeo and his clique had turned up to the party and made Tybalt furious. After this scene, Tybalt makes his way to the Montagues house where he challenges Romeo to a duel. Romeo, understanding he is the cousin of the women he loves, did not accept the challenge because he now sees Tybalt as family after marrying Juliet. Having his friend’s back, Mercutio steps up to the plate and accepts the challenge on Romeo’s behalf. Unfortunately, Mercutio is killed by Tybalt. In an anger fuelled rampage, Romeo goes into pursuit with Tybalt. When Romeo finds Tybalt, he then kills him. Prince, who was the prince of Verona, stated in the beginning of the play that if any more bodies were found in the streets, their lives will pay the forfeit. But understanding that Tybalt killed Romeo’s best friend so the grieving Romeo felt the need of revenge, he was only banished. The actions of Tybalt ended up with Romeo getting exiled from the city and being pushed away from Juliet. His play, ‘Romeo & Juliet’, is strongly categorised in the tragedy section because of its ability to make the reader become attached to the protagonists, who die at the end of the play. Nurse, Tybalt and Friar Lawrence are to blame for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet for marrying the lovers, helping to consummate the marriage, wanting revenge and killing people who the protagonists love dearly. Although they are held responsible for the tragic ending, the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ can be considered outstanding due to the irony of the play and how death can bring people together. Without these three characters, the unique tragedy wouldn’t be a tragedy at all, this is what made them such important characters throughout the play. By reading ‘Romeo & Juliet’, the audience can understand misconceptions within love, innocence within love, and how love can result death or tragedy by naivety and
