Good or Bad? Originally the 2014 winter olympics in Sochi were planned to cost around $12 billion, however they ended up costing Russia $50 billion. The extremely large investment that is the olympic games, rarely pays off. There have been few games that bring financial good for a host country. The olympics require constructing new venues for sports that aren’t traditionally common, and upgrades on the hosts transportation, sanitation, and security systems. To add to that, many olympic stadiums end up being left unused. The Brazilian government supposedly spent $1 billion on reducing pollution to make a safe environment for the thousands of people that compete in or watch the Olympics. Billions of dollars are put into upgrading transportation, constructing sports venues, and improving environmental sustainability. All of these are required of a city before they host the Olympics, the games attract thousands of people, so efficient systems of transportation are a must. many terrorist plots involving the Olympics are stopped every time they happen. Rio faced hundreds of Olympics based threats before and during the games. “Brazilian officials arrested 10 members of an Islamic organization, who were plotting a terrorist attack on the Olympic Games, being held in Rio De Janeiro. The suspects are part of a group called Defenders of Sharia. The brazilian justice minister described the group as “absouloutly amatuaer” and poorly organized on it support of ISIS” (Hannon). To properly host the Olympics, the host city must improve their security, no matter how developed the city is.
The 2002 winter games in Salt Lake City are viewed as an example of success, in the Olympic spectrum. The city used venues that were already built contributing to the fact that these games are one of the very few that actually made money off of hosting the games. However these games did not come without problems, the unfortunate events of 9/11 took place, increasing security across the world.
