Fitzhugh discussed how liberty and equality in other countries and states such as France, the north of the U.S at the time do not benefit from equality (the abolition of slavery) instead they are caught in chaotic society where Fitzhugh believes the inferior should stay inferior and obedient. This document contained capitalistic concepts in that Fitzhugh constantly kept speaking about free competition being the same as equality or freedom and that it needs to be regulated strictly in a way so that men who are poor try to better themselves economically but the selfish are the ones who will always succeed in free competition in Fitzhugh’s words. By saying the smarter, richer man will succeed off the backs of the lesser successful man is capitalism right off the bat. This document really shames America's democracy at the time because while people are celebrating the country's independence and their independence from the royal crown, there are people who work for their luxuries, comfort and economy who are in chains and this celebration is not for them. “America is false to the past, false to the present, and solemnly binds herself to be false to the future.” (Douglass) 1848 Free Soil Party Platform too uses democracy in their speech by bringing up freedom for all men and that all men should be equal in the U.S but most of all this document displays a lot of mobility concepts. (Keene, 342) The free soil party is known for their beliefs in anti-slavery but most of all making sure slavery does not expand westward and throughout this document, the author argues that the U.S doesn't need anymore southern slave states, and any new country to the U.S come in as a Free man state and that they be protected from southern slaveholders. Black people, natives and in general all people of color were seen as an inferior race thus they had no right to have equality or freedom which made the way Americans felt so proud about their freedom ironic.
