However, after the Declaration of Independence was passed in 1776 with the fifth amendment, the equality and freedom of theses slaves and free laborers were questioned when Dred Scott sued for his freedom and the labor unions sought for better conditions (Doc L). Frederick Douglass found the southern “nation . . . guilty of practices” like slavery and called them savages (Doc G). When southerner, George Fitzhugh, said “ the negro slaves of the South are the happiest and freest people”, who enjoy the most “rights and liberties” Douglass condemned this as the southerners’ “veil to cover up the crimes which would disgrace “ the nation (Doc GH). As an escaped slave, Douglass considered the southerners as hypocrites when they “shout . . . liberty and equality” on the Fourth of July (Doc G). He criticizes this day as “a sham”, of the Declaration of Independence, full of “gross injustice and cruelty” with “boasted liberty” (Doc G). Though the south was denounced for their practice of slavery by the north, the north was also by the south for their cruel treatments of the free laborers. ‘Civil’ means for the citizens, but there was only one war and one victory so only half of the citizens got what they desired and there was also a portion of the citizens, who opposed the war. So was the Civil War truly civil? The Election of 1860 included all the factors that led to the civil war, but the free laborers were never mentioned, so what part of Civil do they represent, did they want war?
