Prompt: Explain at least three theories of gender/gender development, using at least one theory from chapter 4 and one theory from chapter 5. Use the texts, and gender experiences from your life to help illustrate each theory.
Introduction:
Define Gender: Gender is the state of being masculine or feminine in reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological differences. Therefore, gender is not constructed by anatomical apparatus, or one’s sex.
Gender Difference: The interplanetary theory of gender simply recognizes that genders are innately different/ simply recognizes existing core differences. It’s also how we explain gender inequality, and is a shared belief amongst different theorists.

However, the Sex-Role Theory brings in the idea of a gender identity through social construction, and age. In other words, gender is something one does, not something one has; and is lifelong and is forever changing. We create and recreate our gendered identities within context of interaction and institutions.
Supporting the Argument:
Social Construction:
Identity: A fluid assembly of meanings and behaviors ex. Values, images, and prescriptions that are formed by the world around us.
Interaction: (micro-level) Experiences with others.
Example: Everyday experiences with people
Institution: (macro-level) Social life that reproduces gender difference and inequality.
West and Zimmerman: Came up with the idea of “doing” gender.
“Doing” Gender: Performing activities and exhibiting the traits that are prescribed for us (Kimmel 2013: 131). Gender is done recurrently through interaction with others.
Gender is interactional, not just physical
