Shakespeare shows that free choice trumps fate through two examples. Macbeth could have chosen to not kill Banquo or even the king to get hold on to King Duncan’s power. Macbeth had all he wanted and fate did not push him, Lady Macbeth did. Lady Macbeth chooses to trick Macbeth so she can climb up the ladder with her husband to power. “By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes. Open, locks, whoever knocks” (Macbeth Act 4 scene 1 line 44-47). They pushed Macbeth into believing their prophecies. Macbeth would have had a long life if it wasn’t for the witches.
