It was blank.”(“The Lottery”...69) From Shirley Jackson’s story “ The Lottery”, she uses suspense, and foreshadowing.To keep the reader's attention. Which are still used in real life.
Foreshadowing often appears at the beginning of a story or chapter. Foreshadow is a literary device which a author gives an advance or hint of what is to come later in the story.(http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/foreshadowing)
Many details in “The Lottery” foreshadow the violent conclusion.”Children put stones in their pockets and make piles of stones in town square( “The Lottery”...02). Which seems like innocent play until the stones true meaning becomes clear at the end of the story. Tessie’s late arrival at the lottery sets her apart from the crowd, and then Mr.

Summers says “ Thought we were going to have to get on without you” it's clearly about Tessie’s fate.(“The Lottery”...09).
The author says that the villagers,”Still remeber to uses stones”(“The Lottery...28). Shirley Jackson gives clues, but not until the moment when a rock actually hits Tessie’s head.
Suspense is a state or condition of mental uncertainty or excitement, as in a waiting decision or outcome, usually accompanied by a degree of apprehension or anxiety ( http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/suspense). Shirley Jackson uses suspense in “The Lottery”, by revealing or explaining its true nature. Before Tessie’s gets stoned, Shirley Jackson begins to show something strange when the lottery begins and the crowd grows nervous, and she gives that intense feeling when Tessie protects Bills “winning” selection during the story(“The Lottery...27).
At this point Shirley Jackson has the reader wanting more and more of what's to come next. By withholding information until the last possible second, Shirley Jackson builds up the story's suspense and creates and a shocking conclusion. Foreshadowing is a literary way to anticipate plots in books or movies,by using evidence such as objects or an event. The gloomy face before someone tells you they want to break up.The clouds darkening before a storm.A man waits outside the school in a van, days before a kidnapping.A man starts to say how the world would be fine without him, before his suicide.Peace talks end between the two countries, making war inevitable(.https://www.quora.com/Does-foreshadowing-exist-in-real-life-or-only-in-literature). A good example is smoking can cause lung cancer and you can die from that.“Smoking can cause lung disease by damaging your airways and air sacs found in your lungs” ( www. WebMD.com). A lot of people in this world don’t see what self harm they do to their body. Heavy drinking can cause anemia which means the red blood cells carrying the oxygen throughout our body lowers down(www. WebMD.com). Drinking is an example of foreshadowing . Which means that you can stop anything bad from happening to you. All these objects or events cause bad things to happen to you ,people around you, and the people that care and love you. These are some of the examples of foreshadowing in real life and what happen to people around the world. This means that you , yourself can stop all these things to happens. Suspense and thriller do a good mix in short stories psychological thriller stories, murder,and crime investigation.
