Foreshadowing In Jane Eyre Epiphany Essay

An epiphany can be defined as a sudden realization. From Homer Simpson to the world’s most intelligent scientists, each has had an epiphany of sorts. In literature an epiphany can be anywhere from learning a new concept to changing the way a person thinks. An epiphany comes in many forms, it may take a ritual or it may come naturally. In Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Jane brought foreshadowing to my attention to a subtle, yet bold event.

Foreshadowing can be found in both books and movies. The warning of a future event can be difficult to find if you do not know what to look for. “The day after Rochester proposes to Jane under "the great horse-chestnut at the bottom of the orchard," that same tree gets "struck by lightning in the night, and half of it split away"” (pg 119). Noticing that

Rochester and Jane were not meant to be. When getting further into the book, Rochester reveals that he is married. This is the event that was foreseen in the splitting tree. The bond once held by two individuals is broken. The tree splitting in half was seemingly natural, but it was a major indication of a breakup. I have realized that foreshadowing is indicated by an author making a seemingly ordinary event extraordinary. A sign would be a long or thorough description of a simple action. Since the author took time to rigorously describe the event, it must be important. Another indicator of foreshadowing would be a flashback. A memory that needs to be revisited is a signal that the particular moment will come into play in the future. These two signs of foreshadowing make it easier for me to identify what events are going to hint at a future event. One way I have used my new tool of recognizing foreshadowing was in 1984 by George Orwell. The author kept repeating that Winston owned the illegal diary. This repetition lead me on to believe that the diary was going to be Winston’s downfall. Bringing up the diary in Winston’s conversations hinted at the idea

In most cases the use of foreshadowing is a discrete one, in “The Things They Carried”, by Tim O’Brien, it is much more obvious, at least when it comes to the climax of the story. There are many instances of foreshadowing throughout the story, but the one that is most important is also the one that is most obvious. As the reader is first given the list of items that each man carries as well as its weight, the author takes this opportunity to introduce an important event that has not yet happened. “Ted Lavender, who was scared, carried tranquilizers until he was shot in the head outside the village of Than Khe in mid-April.” (565).…

Some examples of foreshadowing are on pages 225,88,89,93,118, and 279, but some important quotes that show foreshadowing are “what if Commander Jameson took them out to hide something from me?” said by June on page 225, this quote shows how the government is hiding big things from people and it also shows that the government might be behind Metias’s death. Another quote is on page 88 and 89 in days point of view “when I pull away frame it and look closer at the metal, I notice symbols carved on its surface. The most apparent “foreshadowing“ is the story Prologue, but that doesn’t one hundred percent work. The prologue doesn’t exactly hint at what will happen in the story, it just flat out tells you the events of the play. A different foreshadowing that also tells the events of the play, but is less telling, is the scene where Romeo tells about the dream he has. When Mercutio responds with his story about “queen mab”, he responds with “I fear, too early: for my mind misgives. Some consequence yet hanging in the stars, Shall bitterly begin his fearful date.…
