Flaws of Humanity…. A Great Danger An unknown person, once said, “Some people create their own storm, then get upset when it rains”. This person’s words prove to be accurate in the Homer’s The Odyssey. In this legendary poem, Odysseus, the main character gets trapped on the Calypso 's Island when returning from Trojan War because Gods didn’t wanted him to get home. Bust as time flows, Gods decide to let him go. Hence, the poem is about Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca and how he gets hold of the situation in his home when he makes it to Ithaca. And, from beginning to end in the poem, it is seen that how people get in tremendous trouble due to their own deeds as lot of them are greedy, liars and rude. In other words, a large number of people

First, Odysseus’ men show greed when the king of wind, Aeolus give them a bag of wind to reach Ithaca, but the crew members do not know what is inside it. They think that there is treasure inside the bag given to Odysseus and they try to open it. One man in the crew announces,“Hurry, let’s see what loot is in the sack, how much gold and silver. Break it open ― now!” (Homer 10.49-50). This shows that Odysseus’ men are greedy because they open the sack to see what treasure is in there and perhaps they would have taken some gold and silver if they actually found it inside the bag. This proves that Odysseus’ crew exhibit common flaws of humanity and end up being punished by again getting to the Aeolian Island, the place from where they started. Secondly, suitors of Penelope, Odysseus’ wife, are also greedy as they stay in the palace all day and night, eating and drinking, using all their wealth and resources, and also trying to marry Penelope. Telemachus, Odysseus’ son mentions, “They infest our palace day and night/.../ devouring all my treasure, all my cattle ―”(2.59,80). This shows that the suitors showed greed by eating all their cattle, using all the treasure and above all these they are also trying to marry Penelope. Many men are greedy when they want something very badly and can cross any limits, like done by Odysseus’ men and the suitors of Penelope. People tell immense lies when they know that what they are doing is wrong and still try to hide them like done by the suitors and Circe, the bewitching queen of Aeaea.
