This includes having to be supervised, or any position having higher authority. This contrasts the characteristic of a bureaucracy, hierarchy of authority, clarifying who is in command. At Hood College, President Chapdelaine is the authoritative figure that is centered at the top. Witt, 2013, stated that “a president heads a college bureaucracy; he or she selects members of the administration, who in turn hire their own staff” (pg. 117). All administration and staff at Hood College have responsibly achieved status to acquire a job of authority that allows them to make certain decisions. All of the responsibilities are equally shared between the trustees, administrators, faculty staff and even students. Analyzing the organizational structure of Hood College from both a functionalist and conflict perspective, it is clear that Hood College is very efficient. Hood College is a bureaucracy that displays five basic characteristics and this results in efficiency. From displaying the characteristics, and having set missions, vision and core values Hood College’s goals are met. Hood College is known for academic excellence, caring and committed support staff, and a stable environment, a lot of student diversity and an experienced board of education and the administrative leadership.
