Analyzing The Four Theoretical Contributions

The four theoretical contributions have been analyzed in detail in our Textbook `Organizational theory `.These contributions are starting from the relatively simple Scientific Management (Taylor) and Administrative theory (Fayol) to the more complex ones Bureaucracy and Organizational Structure (Weber) and Administrative Behavior (Simon).
The scientific management is the most logical approach which is based on clear calculation; the work process itself was in focus and trough the method the individual executing the work preferably in the most effective way. At the time of Taylor (early 20th century) his approach was very progressive. However as the time passed the scientific approach was not flexible enough to be able to serve several new

Simon took another step forward and went further from the socio- historical concept to a psychological one. Simon`s model analyses the person`s action-taking and decision making process and highlights that these processes are not as clear and logical as it was regarded before in the previous theories. As per Simon the previous concepts are only working in calculated environments and once a decision is not made as per calculated logic these theories fail. He then evaluates the person`s decision making steps and taking the view of the organization starting from the particular individual. For this Simon states that the organization need to define clear and tangible objective which the person can rely on as guidance. Even today it is taken into consideration that one manager can just have as much direct reports he/she is able to handle with dealing with the special issues and tasks but only over-seeing daily operation. He was a director of a successful mining company therefore he implemented practice and tried to put it in theory. Fayol described 14 principles of management which are still relevant today. Without lining them up all, he included `Unity of Direction`, `Remuneration`, `Authority and Responsibility` which all are having the same meaning today as at the time of his studies. Fayol`s 5 functions of Management gives clear guidance to us as well: Planning- Organizing-Commanding-Coordinating-Controlling is still among the main functions of the leaders in most organizations and as per his diagram, all this revolves around `creative problem
