This ideal of projecting your image as a postfeminist also carries over into the postmodern movement surrounding the debut of the Marlene. The postmodern movement in art that had started in the late 20th century began to move away from the modernist theory of function over form and not being able to decipher individuals in the art to an art style that was purely about form and focused on the individual. Angela Oatley explained the postmodern movement in the early 21st century as, ”… all forms of art are made with the sole purpose of being ‘consumed’ and with a main target of postmodernism being to appeal to a wider audience the two go hand in hand” (Para. 2). It came to fame in the popular TV series Sex and the City and being the first shoe brand mentioned on the pop culture hit boosted the company to notoriety. The shoe’s use in the series showed its ties to the postfeminist movement of the late 20th and early 21st century. The sandal is a product of the consumerism, which is a key part of the postfeminist movement. The idea that one’s identity could be built through the enjoyable occupation of consuming products and men as pleasure was an ideal that was woven throughout Sex and the City. The postmodern art movement happening surrounding the shoe and the design of the shoe also reflected focusing on the ideals of an individual. It focused on creating a statement of the individual designer as well. This was also the evolution in design movements that sought to create a brand that exuded luxury upon first glance to the viewer, both by quality and by name. Overall the Marlene designed by Jimmy Choo was a beautifully constructed sandal that was a statement piece for the wearer that bore the mark of its creator while carrying the mark of a luxury
