Barbara Hulanicki and Mary Quant were two of the most revolutionary and iconic fashion designers, forever changing today’s fashion. These women were both set on a goal, determined to change fashion- and the mark they left on the fashion world will never be forgotten. These women designed every piece of clothing by scratch, and made their clothes affordable and stylish to reach out to the younger crowds. These designers sold clothes to mainly “Women, mostly under 25” (Barbara Hulanicki and Biba). Barbara was starting to venture off into other departments, realizing how important they were becoming in her personal life-“expanding into menswear, make-up, jewellery, paint, cushions, fringed lampshades and satin sheets.” (Hulanicki). A large quantity of the people attracted to this apparel were women in their mid-twenties or younger, but eventually Hulanicki decided to branch out to men and women of all ages for her jewellery and household decorations. Hulanicki had described the crowd she was attracting like so- “‘It was meant to be for girls in the street. They were earning money and they had nowhere to go.’” (Cohen). At one point when Barbara was trying new things, she decided to try and make ‘bigger sizes’, however they didn’t end up selling very well (Cohen). The majority of women in the 1960s were thin because of the famine of today’s food technology, and they were luring in the everyday average woman, making affordable and fashionable clothing was a must- selling bigger sizes weren’t necessary at the time.
