For functionalism the sex role divisions were women carry the domestic labour and caring work at home and oppressed in unequal power relation since men were expected to be the breadwinners. For Oakley (1972) nuclear family was existed by the subordination of women by the sex roles that deprived women of the broader opportunities within the society. Benston (1972) highlighted that women are exploited at home as a source of unpaid labour. Therefore the gender inequalities produce differences between men and women about how they should participate in the social world. The author has drawn attention to the feminist approach to support her argument as women were subordinate than men. The modernity has allowed women to gain better financial independence and growing of divorces and separation. This article highlights that extended families have made shift to nuclear families due to the concept of individualization. However the extended family seems to be in favour of poor working class family structures. The gendered roles have made a shift since in modernized world women are more at work which leads to equality between men and women in social life and at home. The modern relationships of two same sex couples and marriage are not favoured by the majority of society as it is not morally right. Same sex marriage is an equal right then the critics of this type of family upbringing could affect the children. Overall, this article has reviewed the negative and positive perspectives in relation to individual life preferences and its impacts. The cultural shift has developed economic freedom between genders and equal rights, which leaded society into democratization and
