External Structure The external structure includes two subcategories, extended family and larger systems. These two subcategories will give you an idea about how the family interacts with individuals outside of their own nuclear family. Extended family. An extended goes beyond the nuclear family. It may include cousins, grandparents, uncles, aunts, foster children, etc. Social media is a big part of this world today, and it helps many people stay in contact with their family. The family keeps in touch over Facebook with their extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. They have extended family all over the state of Minnesota, but they are lucky to have a large amount of their family in their home town. While talking with the mother about their extended family she said, “We are a very close family. At least once a week, we have dinner at my mom’s or my sisters to catch up and have a good time.” She also said that her and her husband’s family are very supportive. They know everything about everyone and would do anything to help each other in time of need. Larger systems. Larger systems refer to any social agencies or personnel with whom the family has close contact with (Wright & Leahey, 2013). Many people think of larger agencies as public welfare, foster care, outpatient clinics, etc., but they can also include social media, texting, chat rooms, etc. Being involved with larger systems can be stressful and not the best choice for…
