Society is constantly changing as well the individual perspectives in a changeable society. One of the more exciting aspects of being a member of a changeable society is the continue discovery of what is going on and what we see. Yet from time to time, I step back and try to figure out how to perceive social changes. I am a victim like everyone else of social changes that contribute to the issue of socioeconomic class so much that these social changes shape our Kansas State University community perspectives as much as our state and country perspectives.
Besides, the issue of socioeconomic class make me reflect daily on where we are going and what we see as students in Kansas State University, as part of both the state of Kansas and the United

I believe the bases for the socioeconomic class are income and education. A person fit to a socioeconomic class depends on the combination of economic situation and education, which dictates a person’s social position or class in relation to others. The base of income is clearly associated with wealth, which could be inherited. Each base is pertinent when creating your individual opinion. Indeed, I believe that a person with a frivoling economic situation, rich, high income and higher education is considered upper class within our society. A person with a stable economic situation, a working person, an average income and some college is viewed middle class. A person with very little economic security, poor, a lower income and no college education is viewed lower class. We can assume there is a huge gap between upper class and lower …show more content…
The factor of education contributes to the issue of socioeconomic class and vice versa, the socioeconomic class clearly affect education. I endured this situation myself; my parents are part of the working class and are able to pay for college. As stated by the American Psychological Association (APA) the socioeconomic status (SES) relates to education, “low SES and its correlates, such as lower education, poverty and poor health, ultimately affect our society as a whole” (“American Psychological Association”). Often poor young adults cannot attend college because parents do not have the money to pay for the tuition and fees. This fact supports my perspective that education affects the socioeconomic class and vice versa corroborating there is a correlation between low SES and lower

In the Dennis Gilbert and Joseph Kahl’s model of social class, there are couple of criteria classify people into different social class ladders, such as the Capitalist, Upper Middle Social Class and Working Poor. Usually the model will judge the people through looking on their family income, occupation of family member hold and their education level. Under the model, I believe that my family belongs to the Upper Middle Social Class. It is mainly because my family income is above $125,000, but below the income earned from capitalist. Also, my parents were the small and medium sizes business owners, the occupation of their job title is similar with the profession and upper manager.…

Dear University of Texas, Austin Office of Admissions, I write this letter to you in regards to your race-based affirmative action program that has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court as of 2013. Just a few years ago, a woman by the name of Abigail Fisher challenged your affirmative action program created to increase the enrollment of minority students. The Supreme Court decided in favor of this program, and by doing so, upheld the use of race-based affirmative action in higher education, specifically in your institution (“Equality” 1). I believe that after the Supreme Court’s decision, rather than continuing the use of race-based affirmative action, you should have taken a closer look at your admission process and made changes accordingly.…

Many can argue and say that to get a high education there is no need to be in a high social class. There are plenty of people who feel completely different about this issue and think that in order to get a good education, one must come from a wealthy background. Gregory Mantsios, director of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies at Queens College of the City University of New York, gave his audience many examples of how different each social class was in his essay “Class in America 2012”. Some authors who also had something to say in regards to class and education were Jean Anyon, who was a social activist and professor of educational policy in the Ph.D Program in Urban Education at The City University of New…

Much of my concern about inequality can be drawn from above, but I would simply add the I believe inequality is both obviously bad for the communities it exists in, poor economic growth as a whole, and most importantly potentially politically destabilizing domestically and abroad. My background in political science tends to cause me to drift towards the political implications. But I also want to emphasize that I recognize the important human and social impacts of inequality - I see these impacts every day in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Marquette University is located. It seems to be a destructive force in many of the communities where I have lived.…

Coming from my position in life, I often find challenge in analyzing, interpreting, and discussing social class. It weighs on me that I likely bring unfair biases and predispositions to this topic. I am a white, American, educated, athletic male from a family with both parents still together and without many financial troubles. Aside from perhaps a degree from a prestigious University or boat loads of cash, I do not think that I could be more privileged. Although my privilege might sway my ideas on the matter of social class, I am working to remove these biases in order to truly recognize the ways in which the social construct of social class influences the individuals, communities, and institutions that I come in contact with in everyday life.…

In today’s society it is commonly thought that a person can only be as good as what they come from. The thought being, if Joe Smoe’s father flips burgers part time for a living, that is what Joe will be destined to do too. Or London Tipton from upper-class suburbia, whose parents are lawyers, she will be destined to be a smarty-pants that excels in school and gets a high paying career after college. The culture one grows up in will influence what they aspire to become, but for some that is not always the case. For many students where they come from is what pushes them to become more than what society expects, but they will have a long journey ahead of them just because they do not come from the right social economic background.…

Social class in America is an uncomfortable subject for many Americans; most believe that America is an essentially middle-class nation, however, author Gregory Mantsios argues otherwise. In this article, I will break apart “Class in America-2012” and explain how it creates a persuasive effect on readers. Mantsios accomplishes this effect by debunking popular myths through statistical evidence and providing real-life examples. This analysis will only provide the author’s opinions, and not my own, as to remain objective and fair throughout. Is the social class divide in America as large as most Americans think?…

Throughout the developed world, the standard of literacy for the modern citizen is rising, and Americans are far behind. What was acceptable 50 years ago is not today; societies today must be sufficiently literate in order to maintain a sound economy.…
