1 Why do the ends of the battery get hot after the wire touches them for an extended period of time?
Electrons traveling through the wire, coiled around an iron nail cause the nail to become a magnet. This device is called an electromagnet. The electrical tape holds each end of the wire against the battery terminals. The battery gets hot because the electrons are flowing through the copper wire; the greater the voltage of the battery, the greater the flow of the electrons. This is why higher voltage batteries will cause the electromagnet to overheat (“Hila Science Camp”, 2017).

Inside a speaker a permanent magnet and an electromagnet form a magnetic field. Electricity is used to constantly reverse the poles of the electromagnet. When the poles switch, it causes a disruption in the magnetic field, which makes vibrations. These vibrations are then made into sound. Another device that utilizes is the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine. MRI devices use powerful doughnut-shaped electromagnets to create a magnetic field around a patient’s body. The charges in the atoms of the patient’s body respond to the magnetic field. Computers measure the reactions and make them into pictures. The pictures are then used by doctors to diagnose medical conditions (Lynette,
