Humans are a complex species; a species where circumstances and emotions dictate their actions. Love is perhaps a humans most prevalent motivator, the majority of their actions being guided by the need to love and receive love in return. A person will spend their entire life looking for love; whether it be in a friend, family member, lover, or a personal god. Certain circumstances in a persons life can dictate their ability to give and receive love. War has always been a situation in which people inspect and try to make sense of their ideals of life and what living, loving, and simply existing mean to them. Hemingway’s writing reflects the emotions of humans in times of turmoil, he uses his characters in a way that leaves the reader wishing to know more; evoking a desperate need to understand the characters inner conflict of their relationships with other individuals, god, and themselves.
