Europe and North America in the 19th Century The 19th Century was widely known for its industrial and scientific discoveries and advancements. However, that is not all to be known. Advancements were not only known in science and technologies, but also in the rights of individuals and workers. 4,340 miles exist between the United States and Great Britain, however the relationships between them both seem neighboring. Both the US and Europe emerged becoming the world’s leading powers in military, politics, industrial movements and influence. Great Britain emerged from the Napoleonic wars stronger and both German and Italy emerged as unified nations. The United States emerged from the Civil war without division of power and a more centralized government over individualized states. This growth and stability translates into an influx of possibilities as world-known nations (The Heritage of World Civilizations, pg. 780, Volume 2, Eighth Edition, Copyright © 2009 by Pearson Education, Inc). Triumph of nationalism was a grand success in both Europe and the United States. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was responsible of leading the US into a Civil war to prevent a national split. He was also known for ending slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
