The phenomena of personal identity is one that has always puzzled people around the world, including many famous philosophers. What does it truly mean to be the person you are from day to day, regardless of what is changing and happening around you? Would you be the same person you consistently are if you didn’t have the timeline of memories from your whole life? Michael Gondry has given the general public, arguably, one of the best films of the decades. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, brings together comedy, intelligence and most importantly the power of love to make this film intriguing for all audiences. Subtly mentioning and teaching the lesson of many philosophical theories through the love story of; Joel Barish and Clementine Kruczynski. A once lovely relationship gone bad, the two protagonists insist on undergoing a procedure to medically, permanently remove the memory of one and other. However, after the procedures completion it immediately brought on negative side effects. The predominant philosophical issue that Gondry sheds light on is the philosophical theory of memory and the impact that memory has on personal identity. Since this violating procedure stole specific memories from the characters, it caused them psychological harm and therefore altered parts of their personal identity.
