A quote that represents how retrieving memories can cause pain and how this can cause people to live in constant sorrow can be clearly depicted in “Her past had been like her present.. since she knew death was anything but forgetfulness.” (4 Morrison) This quote can be easily correlated with my personal experience with my resident since she mentioned a couple of times how she misses her husband more than anything and that she wishes she could spend one more day with him. It seems to me that because of how much she loved her husband, it is painful for her to consciously remember him knowing that he is no longer alive and with her. One of the quotes that I really liked from the novel and that helps to understand the idea of death and forgetfulness is: “I was talking about time. It’s so hard for me to believe in it. Some things go. Pass on. Some things just stay. I used to think it was my rememory. You know, some things you forget, other things you never do. If a house burns down, it’s gone, but the place- the picture of it- stays, and not just in my memory, but out there, in the world.” (43 Morrison) This quote from the novel helped me understand Mrs. Miller perspective on the idea of how memories last forever
