Today the craft of art has emerged as a mixture between historical technique, punk culture, and the DIY. “It embraces a vibrant movement of artists, crafters, and designers working in traditional and nontraditional media.” (Levine, 2008) An artist who has embraced a new age of craft with his DIY aesthetic is Michel Gondry. Gondry is a French film director, producer and screen writer. Gondry is known for using simplified film techniques, handmade props, hand drawn type and animations to create an original, visual story through film. The techniques he uses in his films and video clips generate child like masterpieces. Majority of his works are inspired by his childhood and in an interview he states "I dream a lot, and my dreams are very vivid and visual, so I like to use them in my work" (Gondry, 2001) which is clearly seen in a lot of his work. The people that he has worked with have also said that “You can watch him and literally see his brain ticking over, because it's such a clever thing he's trying to accomplish”. (Gondry, 2001). Two good examples of this would be his Cody ChesnuTT's King of the Game video clip (2006) and The White Stripes' Fell in Love With a Girl video clip (2001).…
The fate of a person dictates what will happen in the rest of their life. Fate plays a very important role in the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michel Gondry. In this film, Lacuna Inc., various film techniques, and the relationship between Joel and Clementine all represent the theme of fate. A person’s fate cannot be controlled or altered by what is done to them. The relationships that a person is destined to be in is no exception. Lacuna Inc. has a large impact on many of the…
Is there eternal sunshine in the spotless mind? This is the question posed by writers Charlie Kaufman, Michel Gondry and Pierre Bismuth in their movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This movie, directed by Gondry, explores the idea that feelings and emotions are more powerful than memories, and that if we erased all of our memories, we would still possess the feelings and emotions that were created by those memories. The movie was inspired by a male friend of Bismuth who said that he…

The erasure of one’s memory and the immense loss that comes with it is undoubtedly a frightening thought. Imagine losing your identity or part of your humanity. Imagine feeling an emptiness that leads you to insanity. Imagine realizing that these conditions might be side effects of such a procedure. Part of being human is managing pain and suffering in all its forms and dealing with the trials and tribulations of life even while many of us would rather forget and desire to start a new chapter, a…
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind “How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d” -Alexander Pope Just think, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind; isn’t that a lovely thought, to have a spotless mind? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favorite films and it is also the source from which I first heard the aforementioned quote. The film focuses around…
As I began watching the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I started to assume that the movie would be played out as a typical love storyline. However, that all changed as the “love” story turned into a dramatic element. The writer of this movie set Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet), two individuals that dated in the past, to reconnect not knowing of their previous affairs. In this twist of a story, Charlie Kaufman cultivated this movie with reoccurring themes, which…
Prenatal Genetic Testing: A Technology of Normalization Prenatal genetic testing is a technology made available to more accurately determine whether or not a child could have a birth ‘defect’. The most common birth defects tested for are Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, or an open neural tube defect (Government of Canada, 2013). This paper asserts first that prenatal genetic testing is a technology of normalization, which labels disability as abnormal and a feared outcome, and second that…
Orwell: There is a difference between “sanity” and “truth”, and Winston would have not been able to survive in the 1984 society because he was so different from everyone else. We, as a society, give the meaning of words. If everyone believes in something that is what makes them sane. If a large number of people believe in something that must make it true, truth is what we make it. If you don’t believe what everyone else believes that is what makes you insane. Truth and reality is whatever…
