Do you hold any type of fear towards combat veterans? Are veterans all insane, psychopaths? Well, I have never really looked at veterans as a threat or an innocent character towards society until reading a commentary about them, from one. The commentary was aired on the National Public air, in which navy pilot veteran, Ken Harbaugh argued about the stereotypes of “damaged” veterans. He spoke about how veterans are portrayed through the media in a negative light,such as Vietnam movies and Iraq movies that in terms, is not always true. Harbaugh compares and contrast, “damaged” veteran stereotypes, to how veterans really are outside of combat; and from his commentary I understand the effects, media influenced stereotypes could have on war veterans.
Veterans are under scrutiny, by a society that has come to believe that veterans are deranged individuals. Most of us are under the impression the vets are traumatized war heroes, who will probably cause harm to themselves, and the public. So what caused this …show more content…
Most stereotypes are wrong, and based on Satterfield’s article “vast majority of veterans returning from war are healthy and ready to lead and are more resilient emotionally, physically, and spiritually than their non-veteran peers.” The truth of the matter is, the media has majority of the public fooled into believing that vets are liabilities, when really they are contributors to society. Movies are not all real, they are fictional, and even the ones based on true events are still exaggerated for dramatic effect.
