In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, black and white people are segregated due to racial discrimination and the Jim Crow law. Tom was found guilty and therefore he was killed because of the crime he committed and because his skin colour. Atticus mentioned to Aunt Alexandra that, “Tom’s dead.… He was running…he broke out into a blind raving charge at the fence and started to climb over it…they fired a few shots in the air, then to kill” (315). The reason why they killed him is because they were angry that he raped a white folk. If Tom was white, the guards may have not shot him. Therefore, although he was found guilty, he was killed because of the crime he committed and because of his skin colour. These three examples prove how people were treating African Americans in general over the course of the time of Tom Robinsons trial. This diminishes their identity by because they were not treated properly due to the racial segregation in Maycomb. It also contributes to their identity of themselves because due to the fact black people were treated differently than whites and how white people talked and respected black people. The Jim Crow law was one of the key factors of segregation. This is because the Jim Crow law was used in the 20th century to disallow whites to communicate with blacks. Since this law was in effect, it created racial segregation between the white’s and the coloured people. Since then, racial segregation has diminished .
