I believe the objective of the test is to prove to the examiner the applicant's grasp of the English language and the understanding of Australia’s history, traditions, national symbols and Australian values. The test is a good pathway to understanding of the history, cultural diversity, traditions and the values of this great nation. Having an exposure to the socio-cultural diversity of Australia helps new migrants to appreciate the cultural events of the Australians.

Ms. Hanson’s maiden speech in the House of Representative in my view is of poor taste. It was widely reported in the media. She may have a right to say anything but I cannot understand her questioning the multicultural policy of successive Australian Governments. She may be one who had Anti-immigration and anti-multiculturalism influence but I cannot see it as balanced thinking speech.

I personally believe that she has a racist outlook and xenophobia for the new immigrants though she herself in an immigrant little realizing what Aboriginal people would have felt, though they had no choice. I think it was a landmark speech leading to a changing of heart and the attitudes of the Australian Government towards the stolen generation.
