In ancient times Greek religion was present in all parts of traditional lives. The religion contained many formal rituals these consisted of animal sacrifices, the religion also developed myths to provide explanation for the creation of humans and they also provide Gods with human appearances to makes them more relatable.
The origin of Greek religion has been lost in time, but it thought that dated back to around the Aryan invasions of the 2d millennium B.C this is around 1001. Greek religion was created from a merge between two peoples. The Aegean’s and the Minoans of Crete when they merged they created what is now known as Greek culture.

The role of animals was to be used for humans to show their respect and dedication to the gods. Different animals were associated with different gods depending on what the people though the gods most preferred, but pig was the most widely preferred animal for sacrifice as they symbolised purity.
There were three main reasons for sacrifice, to honour, to thanks and to request something from the god, this could be safe passage when they are sailing or for a good crop during the year.
Sacrifices continued until around 500 BC where began became old fashioned and weird, animal sacrifices as no longer done by the Greeks in the modern day, but they still honour the gods by participating in weekly ceremonies and other activities to show their dedication to the gods, but there is a limited number of people who do this as it is slowly diminishing in
