Being a citizen to me means the goals, hopes, and the responsibilities of those that live in a particular city, state, or nation. A citizen upholds the law of where one lives. One has rights to live and prosper, where one feels at home, and a sense of belonging. This is not the legal definition of a citizen but what being a citizen means to me. My definition and the textbook definition are quite different in many aspects. The definition of citizen according to Merriam-Webster is a resident or inhabitant of a state (Citizen, n.d). I feel that often time nationalism is confused with being a citizen.
