Life events- In 1786 Goethe, aged 38, left Weimar for a two years (1786-1788) sojourn in Italy. He had had an ongoing relationship with Charlotte, the lady in waiting for Barones von Stein, who did not accompany him in Italy. They had met in 1776. The relationship ended in 1789. Mazzarello (2010) has written a study of the two year journey. He concluded that Goethe withdrew from relationships with women when he found that a potential lover had a fiancée or boyfriend, and that there was evidence that Goethe suffered from generalized anxiety.
There is another description of Goethe on that journey in which he is presented as a assertive and successful lover. Written by Goethe (1790), it is called “Erotica Romana” Kindle loc. 10396, 10558 . It is primarily a poem dedicated to a current and undistorted erotic reality. One stanza catches our eye. It tells of an evening when his lover fails to appear. His distress at her behavior fades as he realizes that her guardian is there in her place, a threatening power figure offering danger instead of love.
