He was repeatedly turned down by the army because of an eye injury. (Jim O’ Brien 609) He decided to join the Red Cross ambulance corps instead. He served during WWI as an ambulance driver. Hemingway had to carry people’s body and body parts to a makeshift morgue. On July, 8, 1918 Hemingway was seriously wounded in the knee at Fossalta Dipiave, Italy. After he recovered Hemingway worked at odd jobs in Chicago. After the war Hemingway went to Paris as a foreign writer for the Toronto Star. While in Paris Hemingway met and became good friends with F. Scott FitzGerald, and Gertrude Stein. In the 1920’s Hemingway joined The Lost Generation. The Lost Generation consisted of Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, E.E. Cummings, Archibald MacLeish, Hart Crane, Gertrude Stein, T.S Elliot, Ezra Pound, and many other amazing writers. Although Gertrude Stein was credited for the term Lost Generation, Hemingway made the term widely known. The Lost Generation helped Hemingway come with his unique writing style. A Farewell to Arms is about an American ambulance driver on the Italian front during WWI. The story is based off of a part of his life. He wrote For Whom the Bells Tolls while he was married to Pfeiffer. On November 12, 1931 Hemingway and Pfeiffer’s other son Gregory Hemingway was born.
