“I’ve dropped my Brain – My Soul is numb – The Veins that used to run, Stop palsied – ‘tis Paralysis, Done perfecter on stone” (235). The beginning of this poem can be interrupted as being about how Dickinson is stuck, unable to keep going as she is now. Looking at how she repeats herself in a way by using “palsied” and then “paralysis” on the same line. It reinforces the theory that she is stuck as she is. By just focusing on the first stanza a great deal of information can be gathered about what Dickinson is saying about herself.
When Dickinson says she has “dropped my Brain” it could be said that she has lost her sense of self. That she is not sure of who she is anymore. “Brain” is capitalized which creates an emphasis on the word. By doing this she wants the reader to know that it is important to the poem as a whole. Brain is also called the mind, so maybe she is telling us she has lost her mind for a moment. Or maybe by focusing on the word dropped to can understand the line better. By dropping her brain there is chance she will be able to pick it up at some point in the future. Meaning it is not lost forever, just for the time being. The rest of that line goes on to say “My Soul is numb”. Again some words are capitalized which again leads the reader to believe that are important. Dickinson is saying that not only is her soul numb but her veins have stopped working. This could be saw as her saying she is dead, but when looking at this whole stanza it does not seem to be the case. Dickinson’s blood has stopped running or maybe not stopped completely just for the moment. She could be trying to say that she has lost the feeling of her blood pumping. Meaning she does not get excited about anything anymore. Again this leads to the conclusion that she is stuck in life and extremely unhappy with how she is living right at this moment in her
