Chronic diseases are rapidly increasing in the American population. Many people are suffering from preventable diseases like heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, and obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity is a major public health issue that affects more than 36 percent of adults in the United States. Many public officials have researched the many factors that influence what causes people to become obese. Factors that have been identified include a person’s behavior, genetics, and their community environment. The rates obesity and physical activity will be analyzed within neighborhoods in New York City, specifically 124th-128th street and 76th-80th street in the borough of Manhattan.

Many studies have been conducted to gain a better understanding of the reasons for why people are becoming obesity. Two factors that have shown to have a direct correlation on the likelihood for a person to be obese is their eating habit and their levels of consistent physical activity. A study published in The American Journal of Epidemiology in which the study investigated the relationship between a neighborhood 's social and physical environment and body mass index of participants. The physical factors that were analyzed were the walkability of the neighborhoods as well as the availability of healthy foods.
